English / Language Arts Curriculum Area Information
Welcome to Kalamazoo Public Schools’ English Language Arts Programs and Curriculum Area. Kalamazoo Public Schools’ motto, “Every Child, Every Opportunity, Every Time,” exemplifies the goal of helping every student learn to use language effectively as a tool for communication, as an instrument for communication and as an instrument for thinking, learning, and imagining.
The Michigan Curriculum Framework and the Grade Level Content Expectations guide the curriculum objectives for each grade level of the KPS English Language Arts Curriculum. The design of the curriculum provides balanced literacy instruction. "Becoming fully literate means, among many things, being able to independently use strategies to construct meaning from text, draw upon texts to build conceptual understanding, effectively communicate ideas orally and in writing, as well as possess an intrinsic desire to read and write." (Gambrell, Mazzoni 1999)
