News From Lincoln: June 1
Bullying
What is bullying? Bullying is another name for harassment. It can take many forms, such as pushing, kicking, hitting and threatening. It may also consist of name-calling, humiliation, sarcasm and spreading rumors in person or through cyber-bullying (over the Internet). If your child is a victim of bullying, don’t tell him or her to strike back at bullies. That usually creates more problems than it solves. Instead, discuss with your child how to avoid situations in which bullying occurs; give your child some ways to respond to bullies (ignore the bully, walk away, try not to show that he or she is angry or upset, tell a trusted adult at school); let the school know and discuss with school officials what next steps to take; provide emotional support for your child; keep your child included when finding a solution, but make sure you are taking action.
